Current car seats are designed with respect to ergonomics, production and cost efficiency, but in many cases not for protection in a low speed rear-end impact. The Institute of Vehicle Safety therefore funded different seat test series, where a dynamic seat test standard proposal has been worked out. This standard has been already discussed at IS0 and should be implemented in future regulations to improve the protection of the occupant. Currently the ISO/TC22/SClO/WGl is in the process of developing criteria for a dynamic test standard.
At the moment, one test procedure should test the performance of the seat at delta v 15 km/h and a mean acceleration of 6g, with an additional test at delta v 10 km/h. Two test series with a total number of 24 tests mainly conducted at 15 km/h were carried out in which it clearly turned out that many seats show significant safety deficiencies.
