The global geometric properties of the ribs from a medium-framed cadaver specimen were studied. The observations are in agreement with the qualitative descriptions presented in most textbooks on human anatomy.
A simple geometric model of the idealized typical rib is proposed and its features are shown to compare favorably with experimental data. This model coupled with previously reported cross-sectional properties facilitates the description of typical ribs as structural members in the study of the dynamic structural response of the thorax.
