This paper discusses the status of the program of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for upgrading side impact crash protection. The program consists of subprograms in the areas of accident data analysis, test procedure development, test equipment development and development of demonstration vehicles, The NHTSA expects to issue a proposed standard for dealing with the problem of side impact crash protection in the near future.
