This paper reports the current status of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) pedestrian head-injury reduction research program. The pedestrian injury statistics of the United Stares are briefly reviewed and relationships between measured responses in laboratory testing and field injuries are offered.
The elements which are necessary to prescribe a test procedure are identified and discussed. Some possible test procedures are presented, and the data upon which a choice could be made is provided.
Various measurements of current U.S. vehicles are provided. These include geometrical measurements of the front ends, measurements of the underhood clearance and impact response measurements from testing with a pedestrian headform impactor. One vehicle is discussed which exhibited exceptional hood clearance and impact response measuremennts.
