Despite their rising prevalence, fragility fractures of the pelvis (FFPs) remain largely under investigated. This thesis aimed to better understand the impact of stable FFP management and the potential of probiotics to improve FFP healing. It was established that the majority of patients with non-operatively managed FFPs do not return to baseline levels of function and QoL, with many patients worsening up to 2 years post-injury. Limited bone healing was observed in this cohort and no relationship was detected between function, QoL, and radiographic healing. Utilizing a novel Type 1a FFP model in osteoporotic rats, probiotic treatment for 12 weeks, starting 6 weeks pre-fracture, significantly improved pelvic bone microstructure. A sufficient duration of probiotic treatment was required to alter the post-fracture inflammatory response. Overall, this work highlighted the limited healing seen in patients with FFPs and suggests potential benefits of probiotic supplementation for patients at risk of an FFP.
