The following summarizes in part the studies by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) aimed at understanding the problem associated with protecting children in the accident environment as well as the effort aimed at reducing the number of child injuries and fatalities produced by automobile accidents. Studies used in defining the problem are discussed. Restraint devices recommended for various age groups of children will be presented. Requirements of the upgraded child restraint standard, FMVSS No. 213. are reviewed. Finally, future effort in child safety is presented.
