In order to add to the anecdotal information in the current literature, the present study was designed to identify and analyze field data on side impact injuries in vehicles equipped with side airbags. The United States National Automotive Sampling System (NASS) database was queried with the constraint that all vehicles must adhere to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards FMVSS 214. Sixty-eight cases were discovered with side airbag deployments that had 56 left side and 12 right side impacts. In these 68 cases, seven cases had no injury. Approximately one-third of the injured cases had only AIS 1 level trauma. From a trauma perspective, 446 injuries occurred to various body regions, with a majority (two-third) identified at the AIS 1 level. Analyses of these epidemiological data are presented as a function of occupant, vehicle, and crash-related variables, and type of side airbag.
