There has been a great deal published about the effectiveness of lap shoulder belts. This data has been collected primarily from contrived situations wherein either dummies or test personnel were used. Very little has been collected and published regarding live situations, after all, nothing can simulate a human body like a human body nor can a simulated crash be as accurate as an actual crash. It was the original intent of the authors to do a statistical study which would illustrate the value of lap shoulder belts as compared to lap belts only. We have some reported accidents in lap shoulder belts; however, not enough reports which would make such a study statistically significant. Therefore, we are defining the problem at hand and illustrating how the lap should belt meets the problem--the virtues as well as the limitations.
