Patients' estimates of their impairment one year after single injuries to the lower limbs or abdomen have been compared with their Injury Impairment Scale scores. Only 8% of patients with abdominal wound replied to the postal questionnaire, compared to 45% (173 patients) with lower limb injuries. 41% had IIS:0, 49% IIS:1, and 10% IIS/2. However only 8% of patients reported being symptom free at one year. Of the remainder, 96% complained of pain and 54% of impaired mobility. There was no statistically significant relationship between IIS and any patient reported symptom and the IIS underrepresented patients' impairments.
