Fatal accidents in the first fifteen months of the national crash severity study

Abstract

The National Crash Severity Study (NCSS) is a project of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. NCSS collects crash-related data for a rigid sample of accidents within eight sampling areas. This report investigates the fatalities on the first fifteen months of NCSS, which includes towaway, passenger car accidents. The analysis is in two stages. First, estimates of the probability of fatality for NCSS are computed for various conditions, such as the number of vehicles involved and the sex of the occupant. Second, in cases where two factors are highly correlated, such as is the case for rollover and ejection, modeling techniques are used to help quantify the effects of each variable.
