Ninety-four cases of belted occupants who were fatally injured in passenger car crashes were identified in the CPIR file. These cases have been studied to determine the injury causation mechanisms, and the location of injuries on the body. It was noted that injuries to the head/brain region of the body predominate in these data. A subset of the ninety-four cases in which the fatal injuries were incurred despite CDC extent codes of three or less were studied separately to determine if additional occupant protection could have attenuated the injuries. Additional head protection and proper use of full restraints were judged to be most important for these cases.
