In this study, two alternatives to incarceration as punishment for DWI were evaluated using quasiexperimental designs. Recidivism rates for repeat DWI offenders receiving intensive supervision probation with treatment or in-home confinement with electronic monitoring were compared with offenders receiving the traditional jail sanction in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Los Angeles County, California respectively. After adjusting for other factors associated with recidivism, it was found that those offenders receiving the alternative sanctions experienced lower one-year recidivism rates than their comparison groups.
