The first tests of acceleration injuries conducted at Tulane were of the rear-end collision type and were performed using Belgian hares as subjects. The tests were conducted using a small vehicle which was accelerted suddenly by: a) impact with a weighted pendulum, b) a push by an air cylinder. Later tests were conducted using a seat mounted on the piston rod of an air cylinder and the acceleration produced by a sudden stop with the animal riding backward.
