The Passenger Compartment Energy Absorption Subcommittee of the SAE Body Engineering Committee was formed for the purpose of developing performance standards for impact energy absorption for such structures as may be hit by a car occupant in the course of a collision or roll, and the test procedures by which conformance could be determined. It was learned, in the course of the Chrysler development program, that this measurement requires instrumentation with a high order of response. The specifications for this high order of response are now included in SAE Recommended Practice--SAE J921. Other testing procedures and related studies concerned with safety impact problems are being evaluated in a continuing effort to provide standardized industry-wide specifications and test methods to enhance safety characteristics of automotive vehicles. SAE J921 has been accepted by the General Services Administration, and has been made a part of Federal Standard No. 515/2--Padded Instrument Panel and Visors for Automotive Vehicles.
