Falls are common in mountain biking (MTB), and can result in traumatic brain injury if impact occurs to the head. My thesis examines how riders use “safe-landing” strategies to avoid head impact during MTB falls. Through online content review and experienced rider surveys, I identified eleven recommended safe-landing strategies. From analyzing video footage of 300 real-life MTB falls, I found a range of 4-58% in how often the strategies were utilized, and that the average fall employed three strategies. Head impact occurred in 52% of falls. Risk factors for head impact included age, cause of imbalance, cycling speed, fall direction, and use of safe-landing responses including dismounting and stepping. My findings provide insight on how riders respond to MTB falls, and can help to inform improvements in rider training, trail design, and protective equipment to reduce the injury consequences of falls in MTB.
