A comparison of the strength of echinoderm spines and mollusc shells

Abstract

The crushing strength of the skeleton of three species of echinoids and 13 species of molluscs was tested. In general, the molluscs' skeletons were considerably stronger than those of the echinoids. These findings do not agree with those of Weber and his co-workers, who suggest that when buoyancy effects are considered, echinoids have a stronger skeletal material than molluscs.
