Speedway racing is the second most popular spectator sport in the United Kingdom. The motorcycles used are single-cylinder, 500 cc, four-stroke engined machines, with the engines rigidly bolted to the frame: there is no gearbox or brakes and the handlebar is bolted to the steering head. In a recent survey of riders competing in the British League, a very high prevalence of temperature-mediated finger blanching was observed (30/32 riders), with latent interval of approximately five years. Vibration spectrum analysis on a typical speedway machine showed that the vibration was in excess of that associated with the development of vibration-induced white finger (VWF). This condition is demonstrated in a clearly delineated population, with daily exposure to vibration of, typically, from 40 to 50 minutes.
