In order to address the Safety record of heavy trucks in the Province of Ontario, an independent Commission was established with direction to investigate the full spectrum of trucking in Ontario. Considerable public and industry input was received with varied and often conflicting concerns. The Commission provided findings on traffic accident information, driver licensing, training and medical requirements, accident causation, and vehicle maintenance and dimensions. Of the total 61 recommendations, over half have been accepted by the government and are being acted upon. The work of the Commission has assisted the government in clarifying issues and establishing some priorities for improving truck safety in Ontario.
