A review is presented of accident cases involving school buses studied in depth by the Ecole Polytechnique and McGill University Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Teams over the past few years. This paper outlines the accident mechanisms, the results and the causal factors. The principal focus will be on design, deficiencies in maintenance, driver training and attitudes etc. Existing safety standards relating to school buses are discussed along with proposed Governmental safety standards. Our Quebec Provincial Government has formed a Commission looking into bus safety and the main concern is with the driver training and vehicle maintenance. This task force was appointed by the Government to document the numbers and to what degree unsafe buses are operating within the Province of Quebec and to make recommendations with respect to improving the safety of those meeting a minimum standard and preventing those which have been determined unsafe from operating in the future. The results of this Commission's findings and regulations and methods to improve the school bus mode of transportation are discussed.
