This paper describes a simple and effective adaptive technique for mesh refinement in finite-element method models. The proposed refinement method is based on a modified octree refinement approach, and can be applied to an arbitrary hexahedral unstructured mesh. The implementation, Hex-R, is used in conjunction with the finite-element viewer GPPView, and applied to a complex model. The proposed method is demonstrated to be capable of easily and reliably generating an adaptive mesh.
