Considerable research has been initiated to develop countermeasures to mitigate injuries to persons, particularly children, who are present or out-ofposition at the time of airbag deployment. This paper reports on the development of a camera-based optical occupant position sensor system that can be used with multi-stage inflation technologies for modulating airbag deployment.
