Threshold limit for hand-arm vibration exposure throughout the workday

Abstract (English)

The dose-effect relations reported elsewhere (in: Brammer AJ, Taylor W, eds. Vibration Effects on the Hand and Arm in Industry. New York: Wiley, 1982) are extrapolated to predict the vibration level at which the duration of exposure prior to the onset of finger blanching corresponds to a working lifetime. Results are presented for selected percentiles of a cohort exposed to a given vibration level. The vibration threshold so obtained is compared with those derived from other cross-sectional and prospective studies of workers habitually exposed to hand-arm vibration. The agreement between the results suggests that the threshold limit for persons whose hands are exposed to vibration throughout the workday is in the range 1 < a_K < 2 m/s²,where a_K is a frequency-weighted, rms, component acceleration specified according to ISO/DIS 5349, 1979.

Les relations dose-effet citées dans d’autres documents (dans: Brammer AJ, Taylor N, eds. Vibration Effects on the Hand, and Arm in Industry. New York: Wiley, 1982) sont extrapolées pour prédire le niveau de vibration pour lequel la durée de l’exposition avant l’apparition de la tnaladie des doigts blancs correspond à une durée de vie de travail. Les résultats sont présentés pour des percentiles choisis d’une cohorte exposée à un niveau donné de vibrations. Le seuil de vibration ainsi obtenu est compare a ceux dérivés d’autres analyses transversales et prospectives effectuées avec des travailleurs habituellement exposés è des vibrations du système main-bras. L’accord entre les résultats suggère que, pour les personnes dont les mains sont exposées aux vibrations pendant leur journée de travail, le seuil se situe dans la fourchette 1 < a_K < 2 m/s², où a_K est une composante efficace de l’accélération pondérée en fréquence et spécifiée selon la norme ISO/DIS 5349, 1979.
