The term "compatibility" when referred to motor vehicle safety is no longer new. For example, a working group commissioned by the BMFT (Federal Ministry for Research and Technology) has been occupying itself for several years with the question of how vehicles could be made compatible. It is particularly difficult to give a precise definition of the "compatibility" of a safe motor vehicle, since one also has to differentiate between the terms "safety" and "compatibility".
